PSA 10
Mixed media on vintage Disney trading cards
Collectors spend years chasing a PSA 10… the elusive grade that signifies flawless condition and maximum market value. Every untouched corner, every perfect edge, every microscopic detail exists to preserve an objects worth.
I chose a different path.
Rather than sealing these cards away behind plastic, I used them as the foundation for a painting. I knew some could hold value as collectibles. I painted over them anyway.
the result is both destruction and creation.
The familiar image of Mickey survives beneath heavy black, white, and crimson paint, partially buried but never completely erased. The cards remain visible enough to remind viewers what was sacrificed, while the painting becomes something that can never be reduced to a population report or auction price.
The custom frame reinforces the contradiction. It presents the work with the care and reverence of a prized collectible, yet what it protects is an act of rebellion against the very market it resembles.
